Description: | To describe cariogenic risk levels in children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes mellitus. Materials and methods: Six patients between 5 and 16 years of age, with diabetes mellitus type 1, were evaluated according to the International Caries De- tection and Assessment System ICDAS II criteria, the simplified Oral Hygiene Index and UFC for Streptococci mutans and Lactobacilli in saliva. An interview was developed to determine nutritional factors and the use of fluoride agents. Risk levels for caries were determined using the software Cariogram, version 2.1. Results: The adolescents showed a low risk level for developing caries and a buffer capacity reduced by one third. In contrast, children from the ages of 5 to 11 showed a high risk level for develop- ing carious lesions; all of them had previous experience with major caries and a buffer capacity reduced by two thirds. All patients showed high risk levels for Streptococci mutans, while high risk levels for Lactobacilli were observed only in children less than 11 years old. Conclusions: The risk for dental caries in children and adolescents with dia- betes may vary according to age and diverse risk factors. |
