Abstract This paper examines science as a human right and a common good, highlighting the need to create conditions for its effective access through the articulation between open science (OS) and public communication of science and technology (PCST). Based on a conceptual analysis that articulates the perspectives of international organizations and academic literature, it addresses the tensions between the public nature of scientific knowledge and the privatization dynamics that limit its availability and accessibility. Methodologically, a qualitative multiple case study approach is employed, utilizing the Participatory Action Research (PAR) strategy. Within this framework, the Communities of Practice theory is used to evaluate three initiatives at the Autonomous University of Zacatecas: the Children's Science Club, the Quark Group, and the Caxcán Institutional Repository. These cases illustrate processes of social appropriation evaluated through the dimensions of mutual engagement, joint enterprise, and shared repertoire, observing how the right to science is effectively exercised in specific contexts. The analysis reveals that, while these initiatives democratize knowledge, it is necessary to broaden their reach, promote critical training for participants, and adapt specialized knowledge for non-expert audiences. It concludes that the strengthening of articulated communities of practice represents a fundamental path toward consolidating science as an accessible and socially transformative common good.en_US
