| Abstract: | Este libro responde a una exigencia expresada por la comunidad académica internacional y el público en general, a raíz de la publicación de los hallazgos arqueológicos prehistóricos en la Cueva del Chiquihuite (Zacatecas, Mexico) en la revista Nature, en el verano del 2020, donde se anunciaba una presencia humana muy antigua en la cueva zacatecana con un rango temporal vasto abarcando desde hace 31 mil y hasta hace 12500 años: la necesidad imperiosa de contar con una publicación detallada que permitiera conocer la mayor parte (si no la totalidad) del inventario de artefactos de piedra tallada (artefactos líticos) de este sitio y de este modo compensar la carencia de suficientes ilustraciones accesibles para el público profesional y amateur a nivel nacional y mundial. Por ello mismo, el idioma elegido para escribirlo fue el inglés, pensando en la audiencia global. Este libro es, en sí, un catálogo analítico. Es decir, un compendio detallado de 1143 objetos antiguos de manufactura humana que revela, contextualiza y analiza cada una de las piezas liticas de la colección principal del sitio y cuya principal finalidad es presentarlos al mundo con todos sus detalles morfológicos, estilísticos, tipológicos y tecnológicos, esperando que así el lector se haga una mejor idea (y se convenza) del origen humano de los objetos y de los enfoques tecnológicos utilizados para su creación. Aparte del Prefacio y la Introducción escritos por el autor del estudio, el volumen cuenta con las valiosas participaciones de investigadores invitados de renombre mundial, quienes tuvieron la amabilidad (y paciencia) de adentrarse en los borradores de este enorme trabajo y contribuir sus opiniones en forma de Forewords o Epílogo. Con unas 1350 páginas y miles de fotografías a color, la versión digital (ePDF) del libro alcanza los 15 Gb de peso, por lo cual se recomienda manejar su contenido como archivos separados, tal y como este repositorio lo propone (además de considerar el tiempo de descarga, inevitablemente largo). Se optó por conservar el formato pesado de los archivos para que que las ilustraciones incluidas preserven su resolución y capacidad de zoom en pantalla, siendo las fotografías la razón principal por la cual creó este producto editorial. Además de la versión digital disponible aquí para descarga Open Access, el libro cuenta con una edición limitada impresa, reservada para algunas bibliotecas y centros de estudio (ISBN impreso: 978-607-555-113-5). |
| Description: | This book responds to a demand expressed by the international archaeological community, as well as by the wider public, after the publication of the archaeological discoveries at the prehistoric Chiquihuite Cave (in northern Zacatecas, Mexico) in the journal Nature, back in the summer of 2020, with the announcement of very old human presence at the site, spanning between 31000 and 12500 years ago: the imperative need to count with a detailed publication capable to present the majority (whether not the total) of the flaked stone (lithic) artefacts collection, in order to compensate for the acute insufficiency of illustrations published in the 2020 article and available for consultation globally. For the same reason, this book was written in English, although published in Zacatecas. The book is, in itself, an analytical catalogue: a detailed compendium of 1143 ancient stone objects of human manufacture that comes to reveal, put in context and analyze each one of the items that integrate the main lithic assemblage at the cave, with the main purpose to properly present them to the world with all their morphological, stylistic, typological and technological details, in the hope that readers would so become better armed to form much clearer opinions of their own and even be convinced of the human origin of these stone tools. Besides the Preface and Introduction written by the author of the study, this volume counts with the honorable guest-participation of world-renowned scholars who had the kindness (and patience) to delve into the drafts of this massive work and later contribute their own opinions in the form of Forewords and an Afterword. With about 1350 pages and thousands of color photographs, the digital version (ePDF) of this book weighs around 15 Gb, for which reason it is recommended to handle it as separate PDF files, just as this repository suggests (apart from considering the inevitably lengthy download time). We decided not to reduce the size of the individual files, in order to preserve the resolution and zoom capacities of the pictures, remembering that illustrations were the very reason to start working on this editorial product in the first place.
